Three weeks after the devastating fire that affected it, the Matanzas fuel depot area is beginning to show a different and hopeful face, a change that is visible, above all, in the cleaning and sanitation of the damaged area.
But, in a way, the work of restoring this important enclave has only just begun.
“There is work here for a few months,” said the first secretary of the Party’s Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, when visiting the damaged area on the afternoon of Thursday, 25, accompanied by Susely Morfa González, First Party Secretary in the province.
The president ratified the firm intention of having, in the end, “a more and better ordered Industrial Zone, as this is the city’s development zone”, he insisted.
After the painful incident, which caused the death of 16 people and left more than a hundred injured and extensive material damage, forces from various sectors are fully engaged in the recovery of the area of fuel depots, known as Supertanqueros Base and its surrounding areas. .
Rigel Rodríguez, director of Empresa Comercializadora de Combustíveis, explained to Díaz-Canel that work is being carried out at various stages of the recovery, including, according to him, the demolition of damaged buildings and structures, and the beginning of a similar process at the 51st depot. of crude oil, one of four affected by the large-scale fire.
Another of the constants of this program is to reactivate the technological system, in an effort to provide a solution for the operation of the tanker terminal, and continue the work of cleaning, steel recovery, transport of debris and supply of materials, among other activities. , to mitigate the consequences of the incident.
Due to the damage to the soil, a key moment is the work of bioremediation, a strategy in which specialists are working to collect the spilled crude oil and concentrate it in a space designed to apply the substances necessary for its degradation.
According to the authorities of the Ministry of Energy and Mining, the country has the necessary resources to build a tank, but it will be necessary to make certain modifications, as required by experience.
Referring to elements that should be corrected in the face of future contingencies, the president said that lessons should be learned from bad experiences, although he reiterated that what happened in dealing with the incident was a heroic act.
He recommended the redesign of the so-called cubes, which delimit the external area of the tanks, increasing the distance between the fuel tanks and guaranteeing the volume of water needed in projects of this nature.
He said it is crucial to properly take care of all the forces working here. “The work is heavy and people need a good night’s rest,” he said.
With equal emphasis, he referred to the need to write down memories of the disaster and see what the right solution is in each case. There is no detail that is not taken into account in the effort to recover the fuel depots, whose rescue was marked by pages of pain and heroism.
After a brief exchange with experts in the sector and after realizing the complexity and high volume of the recovery actions, the Party’s first secretary emphasized: “This is difficult, but we will overcome it”.
THE COUNTRY DEPENDS ON A GOOD WORK IN THE MUNICIPALITIES
«In this territory there is a localized science, very good producers, enterprising people, excellent manufacturers and a tradition of work and culture of details, which, if integrated, will allow them to seek solutions to the problems of the population and be a reference for other parts of the country» , said Díaz-Canel, at the end of an extensive tour through the municipality of Camajuaní, in Villa Clara, on the morning of Thursday, August 25th.
At the meeting with the government authorities of the land of valleys and parrandas, at which the Government Management System based on Science and Innovation was presented, the Cuban leader learned about the positive experiences applied there, the connection with the Central University «Marta Abreu» in Las Villas and other scientific centers in the province, which resulted in productive results and other achievements.
Iván Higuera, mayor of the municipality, explained to the president the potential of Camajuaní to solve many of the social problems, in terms of food, in the rational use of energy and other issues that have to do with the life of the people, for which there are several economic actors of great force, who now face the challenge of integrating in terms of city development.
In this regard, the president, who said he was excited about everything he observed in Camajuaní, reflected on the idea that it is in the municipality where the Government Management System based on Science and Innovation is most necessary to function well, because if it is applied consistently there, so everything will be better at the province and national level.
In this regard, he praised the experiences of producers such as Raidel García, Germán Morell and Yusdany Rojas, who despite the current resource limitations, which affect everyone equally, show surprising productive results on their farms, thanks to the application of science and their creative resistance. .
During the tour, in which he was accompanied by Osnay Miguel Colina, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party in Villa Clara, and Milaxy Sánchez Armas, deputy governor of the territory, the president had the opportunity to exchange with the residents of the community of Guajén , in vulnerable conditions, where he visited a small mini-industry that will process the productions of its peasants, in addition to other works that were remodeled there.
Likewise, in the popular council of Vueltas, he exchanged with the people, who, upon hearing the presence of the Cuban president at the Casa de Cultura Conrado Colón, took to the streets to acclaim him, applauding the Revolution and Fidel, a gesture that was reciprocated by Díaz -Canel, He greeted the people gathered around him and spoke to them, making true what he had said on the eve of his visit to Villa Clara, when he said that «it is always a contribution to hear firsthand how the economic measures are implemented , its benefits and obstacles».
After that moment, he visited the pig producer Yusdany Rojas, a young man who, at just 31 years old, shows how much can be done, even in the midst of the complex economic reality in which the nation is developing.
There, the president was able to observe the different alternatives implemented by the farmer to feed the more than 800 pigs he has on his farm; in addition to the success achieved in other cultures. The president congratulated him for being a good example of what should be the rule, and in practice it constitutes the application of the concept of resisting and creating.
He also visited the micro-enterprise Jireh-Ebenezer, which produces rubber boots, flip-flops and some textile garments, where he recognized the quality of what is made, and also became interested in each stage of the production process, the workers’ income and marketing prices.
The journey through Camajuaní ended at the Minerva fish farm, an entity that is trying to recover its production levels, based on the search for alternative food for fish, an effort that, according to the dignitary, is essential at the current moment.
